A University of Exeter graduate has launched Blind Fate, an app that skips the swiping and sends you to a pub, café or restaurant in town, tonight.
Most apps want you to stay on them. Blind Fate would quite like you to leave.
It was built by Jay Berry, who came to Exeter from Stroud three years ago and graduated this summer. The app has one button. Press it and it picks someone you’d get on with, finds a pub, café or restaurant nearby, and tells you when to turn up. There are no photos, so the first time you see them is when you sit down opposite them.
“No photos, no swiping, no three weeks of texting,” says Jay. “You press one button and all you do is turn up.”
The idea came from watching his mates. “I kept seeing my friends spend hours alone in their rooms on their phones. One night I forced them all out together and we had a great time. It wasn’t the people, it was the setup.”
It isn’t only dates. You can bring a friend and meet another pair, or join a table of up to six people who just fancy meeting someone new, which might suit anyone who arrived in Exeter this month.
Everyone passes an ID check before they can meet anyone, every meeting happens somewhere public with staff around, and nothing is confirmed until both people have said yes.
Blind Fate went live on the App Store and Google Play on 11 September, in Exeter only for now. The first dates happened within three days. Eleven pubs, cafés and restaurants in Exeter have signed up so far.
The plan, according to Jay, is simple. “Make Exeter busy first. Then take it everywhere.”
Blind Fate is on the App Store and Google Play in the UK. More at blindfateapp.co.uk.
